Chapters

Introduction: Making a Real Difference (247 KB)
As the UN’s global development network, UNDP strives to make a real, concrete difference in the lives of the people it serves.

UNDP in Action: Delivering on Commitments(334 KB)
UNDP delivers programming at the coun¬try level in four core areas: poverty reduction and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); democratic gover¬nance; crisis prevention and recovery; and environment and sustainable development. UNDP also places a special emphasis on key cross-cutting strategies including capacity development, gender equality and South-South cooperation, which is the exchange of best practices between developing countries and emerging economies.

Poverty Reduction and the MDGs: Countdown to 2015 (312 KB)
Poverty reduction and achieving the MDGs is at the heart of UNDP’s development work. A 2009 survey of countries where UNDP provides significant support to national MDG efforts showed that 90 percent had adapted at least one of the MDGs into their national plans.

Democratic Governance: Providing an Enabling Environment (195 KB)
Democratic governance plays a key role in achieving the MDGs; in reducing the incidence of poverty; in managing and preventing conflict; and in tackling climate change. As a result, demand in this area claims the largest share of UNDP’s programme resources.

Crisis Prevention and Recovery: Building Back Better (206 KB)
Last year, 87 UNDP Country Offices sup¬ported national governments in crisis preven¬tion and post-crisis contexts, ranging from direct technical and financial support, to policy leadership and the coordination of interna¬tional agencies to ensure effective and timely response to crisis.

Environment and Sustainable Development: Adapting to a New Reality (269 KB)
UNDP views climate change as not only a critical environmental challenge but also as a serious challenge to development for all countries. UNDP specializes in assisting countries to manage their response to climate change across a number of sectors, includ¬ing poverty reduction, disaster risk reduc¬tion, energy efficiency and natural resource management.

UNDP and the UN System: Focusing on Development (126 KB)
UNDP plays a dual role in programme countries, both as a development partner and as manager of the Resident Coordinator system, as mandated by the UN General Assembly. In 2009, the Resident Coordinators and UN Country Teams worked to position more strategically the UN’s development assistance to focus first and foremost on concerted action toward MDG achievement as part of national development plans.

Inside UNDP: Living Up to Internal Commitments (125 KB)
A high-priority area of risk management concerns the safety and security of UNDP personnel and its programmes. By the end of 2009, 95 percent of UNDP Country Offices were compliant with the organization’s secu¬rity standards, an increase of over 10 percent from 2008.

UNDP Resources (239 KB)
A breakdown of 2009 contributions to UNDP, as well as UNDP’s support to non-bilateral aid delivery.
