NewsItalian Local Agenda 21, ART and JMDI programs through UNDP, together for a human sustainable developmentOn December 13th 2012 a meeting for the presentation of UNDP ART and JMDI Programs with the Italian Coordination of Agenda 21 has taken place in Brussels at the UNDP Brussels premises. The Italian Local Agenda 21 plays an important role in Italy and in Europe as a key player to sensibilize stakeholders by providing and sharing information, in order to make sustainable development through the integration of economic, social and environmental issues. Environ 18 representatives and consultants of Italian Local Authorities participated as members of the National Board on behalf of around 500 Italian Local Authorities (Provinces, Municipalities and Regions) active in their territory in the implementation of the Agenda 21 Action Plans. The objectives of the meeting were to verify the opportunities of collaboration between the UNDP ART and JMDI Programs with this important network of Local Authorities (LA). After an introduction of Moraig Henderson, Deputy Director of UNDP Brussels, ART and JMDI Programs were presented especially highlighting their territorial approach. The community addressed orientation, the achievements and the perspectives for the future and the strong synergies between the two Programs have been also highlighted. Among the fields of mutual interest, the technical assistance in the sector of Governance and Capacity Building addressed to the LAs partners of ART in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Balkans strongly emerged. Also the Local Economic Sector was considered as a strategic field of cooperation, above all thanks to the important network of Local Economic Agencies in Italy and the system of Local Economy development Agencies (LEDAs), by transferring good practices especially in the start up of SMEs after a crisis period. In this context, the important experience of Ferrara and Emilia Romagna Region was taken as a benchmark for the recovery and the start up of the Economic activities after the recent Earthquake.
