Session on Local and Regional Development in Albania

In the framework of the High Level Conference that it was held in Albania this 30-31 October, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior of Albania, UNDP ART GOLD 2 Programme organized and moderated Session VI on Local and Regional Development. The main aim of the session was to showcase the significant knowledge that has been accumulated in Albania and abroad on instruments and approaches to territorial governance and models of regional and local sustainable development.

Recognising the invaluable role of ART GOLD 2 in promoting and establishing these instruments, the session recommended that the Government of Albania should take into consideration the models and good practices developed at local level, which demonstrated to work properly, with particular reference to the Participatory Strategic Plans and Regional Development Agencies. The latter, supported by UNDP ART GOLD 2 and preceding UNDP-UNOPS programmes, since 2003 have demonstrated to be an efficient tool for supporting Local and Regional Administrations in promoting sustainable and human local development processes.

Furthermore, the session suggested to the Government to approve a regulatory framework, allowing Regional Councils and other actors to formally work together identifying strategies, plans, and cross-cutting projects, based on the Participatory Strategic Planning methodology.
