2 May 2012: Promotion of alternative livelihoods in the Mannar Marine Reserve of India helps combate smuggling of marine species and slow loss of ecosystem biodiversity: A project supported by UNDP with funding from the GEF promotes alternative livelihood initiatives including weaving and thatch making, jasmine cultivation and salt-fish making; the employment alternatives help to prevent traditional fishermen from engaging in marine wildlife smuggling.
17 April 2012: Government of Mauritania launches project on Mainstreaming Marine and Coastal Biodiversity into Oil and Gas Sector Development: Developed through a collaboration among UNDP, the Government of Mauritania, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), IUCN and WWF, and with grant funding from the GEF, the project will engage a broad range of other partners and stakeholders, including the oil and gas industry, and local and international NGOs.
9 April 2012: Pakistan launches sustainable transport project with UNDP and funding from the GEF: The five year project will work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in urban transport sectors and strengthen national policies on sustainable transport.
