UNDP's Projects in the DPRK
UNDP DPRK’s goal is to successfully implement the resumed projects approved by the Executive Board in 2009. The six projects that were resumed and are currently being implemented correspond to the following three areas: food security and rural development, climate change and environment and MDGs. The successful and effective implementation of these will make a direct impact in the lives of people, particularly rural populations. They are in line with national priorities to combat poverty, improve people’s quality of life and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The new Country Programme Document (2011-2015) was approved by the Board in February 2011. The areas covered by the CPD include Food security and Rural development, Socioeconomic Development, and Climate Change and Environment. Efforts are currently under way to initiate the implementation of the new programme.
Beneficiaries: In DPRK our work focuses on people at the grassroots level; ALL its projects/programmes cover rural communities in seven Provinces.
Food Security and Rural Development
Adequate nutrition is an urgent need as hunger and malnutrition are widespread. In the past, UNDP focused on increasing grain production. The focus now is on diversifying agriculture (such as vegetables and alternative cereals production) to help meet the Country’s food security needs. Interventions are set to include demonstration projects in small-scale agro-processing in rural areas which will help create employment for men and women, and may be replicated. There are projects on improving an agriculture information system and on ways to reduce post-harvest food losses.

Climate Change & the Environment
Mitigating climate change and producing and consuming energy in sustainable ways has new urgency, due to the increasing frequency of extreme weather phenomena that is bringing about both floods and droughts. UNDP’s programs are multi-faceted in this area, ranging from improving the ability to manage the damage from a natural disaster, to generating energy in a sustainable manner, to reducing pollution.
